Hiring a driver in Sri Lanka: what to agree before you start

A private car with a driver cost about 40 to 80 US dollars a day in 2025, according to Rough Guides. Before you start, agree in writing what the price covers: the daily rate, fuel, tolls, parking, the driver's room and meals, distance limits and hours. If you also want a guide, ask to see an SLTDA licence.
Sri Lanka's official tourism site recommends hiring a car with a driver, and for many visitors it is the easiest way to travel the classic loop. This guide explains what to agree, how to check who you are hiring, and how to stay safe on the road.
What is the difference between a driver and a chauffeur guide?
A driver and a guide are not the same thing. Any driver with a valid driving licence can drive you. Only a driver who also holds a guide licence from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is a licensed chauffeur guide, trained to explain the places you visit.
In Sri Lanka, tourist guides are licensed by the SLTDA. There are four kinds: National guides, Chauffeur guides, Area guides and Site guides. Chauffeur guides take small groups of up to seven people and may guide anywhere in the country; Area and Site guides only work in their own area or site.
Sri Lanka Tourism also keeps a separate list of authorised tourist drivers. Unlicensed guiding is common: a 2024 SLTDA study estimated about 1,460 unlicensed guides, against about 4,900 licensed ones.
How do you check a guide's licence?
A licensed guide is issued a licence in the form of an identity card by SLTDA. Ask to see it. You can also check a guide's name or registration number on the official register at srilanka.travel, which shows the guide's category, photo and the date the licence is valid until.
If you hire through a company, the UK government advises checking that the company is registered with the Sri Lanka tourism authorities and holds a "Safe & Secure" certificate.
What should you agree with a driver before you start?
Agree each of these before the first day. A short message or email that both of you keep is enough.
- The daily rate, and whether it is per day or for the whole trip.
- Fuel. Since March 2026, fuel in Sri Lanka has been rationed. This can affect hired cars, so ask your driver how fuel is handled and who pays (checked October 2026).
- Expressway tolls. Sri Lanka's expressways are toll roads. Tolls can be paid in cash at every expressway. Card payment at the booths is for cards from Sri Lankan banks, so a foreign card may not work there; agree whether tolls are in the driver's price.
- Parking.
- The driver's room and meals. See below.
- Distance and hours. Any daily distance limit, the charge for going over it, and the hours of the working day.
- Entrance fees. Entrance fees to sites and parks are normally paid separately, so ask.
- Payment. Whether an individual driver takes a card is up to them, so agree how you will pay before the trip.
Guidebook descriptions of what a quote includes do not agree, which is why it pays to ask.
Where does the driver sleep?
Your driver usually sleeps at or near your hotel. Many hotels have rooms for drivers, and Sri Lanka Tourism's rules for some types of hotel say they must give drivers a place to stay and meals when needed. Whether you pay for the driver's room and food varies, so agree it in writing before the trip.
How much does a car with a driver cost in Sri Lanka?
As a rough guide, Rough Guides put a car with a driver at about 40 to 80 US dollars a day in 2025, depending on the car and the distance. Prices change, and fuel shortages in 2026 may push them up, so get two or three written quotes.
Tipping. Tipping is not required in Sri Lanka, but it is appreciated. For a driver who has been with you for several days, Rough Guides suggests about 5 to 10 US dollars a day. Ask your hotel or guesthouse what is usual now.
Cash. Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops in cities and tourist areas. Carry cash in small notes for tips, tolls and small purchases on the road. See money in Sri Lanka.
Will the driver take you to shops?
Some drivers and guides earn a commission when you buy at certain shops, such as gem and batik shops. A 2024 study for the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority recorded shop owners describing this.
If you do not want shopping stops, say so at the start, kindly and clearly. If you want to buy gems, choose the shop yourself.
How far can you drive in a day in Sri Lanka?
Outside the expressways, roads pass through towns and climb into the hills, and average speeds are low. A hundred kilometres often takes two to three hours: Sigiriya to Kandy, about 90 km, takes about 2 to 3 hours by road (estimate, checked October 2026). Plan from real travel times, not from distance.
From Galle to the airport is about 150 km by expressway, about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road (estimate, checked October 2026). Tolls apply. Allow extra time before a flight. Our two-week itinerary gives the time for each leg of the classic loop. For a shorter route, see ten days in Sri Lanka.
Is it safe to drive in Sri Lanka?
Road accidents are a real risk in Sri Lanka. Police figures show 2,710 people died on the roads in 2025, up from the year before.
The UK government warns that driving in Sri Lanka is erratic and that road accidents are frequent, especially at night. Plan long drives for daylight, and watch for pedestrians and animals on the road.
- Seat belts. Sri Lanka has a seat-belt law, but according to the WHO it does not cover every seat. Wear a seat belt in the front and the back wherever there is one.
- Speed. Sri Lanka's speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 70 km/h on other roads and 100 km/h on expressways, according to the WHO's 2023 road-safety profile. Ask your driver to keep to them, and to slow down if you are not comfortable.
- Rest. A tired driver is a risk. Plan shorter driving days, and do not ask for long drives after dark.
- Your card. Never give a driver your bank card or PIN. In May 2026, police in Colombo arrested a tuk-tuk driver who took 180,000 rupees from two cruise passengers' card, when the agreed fare was 18,000 rupees.
Can you drive yourself in Sri Lanka?
If you would rather drive yourself, an International Driving Permit alone is not enough. Visitors need a Sri Lankan temporary driving licence from the Department of Motor Traffic; since August 2025 a counter at the airport issues one, valid for up to five months (as checked October 2026). If you rent a car to drive yourself, ask exactly what the insurance covers.
What most visitors miss when hiring a driver
- A driver is not automatically a guide. Only a chauffeur guide is licensed to guide.
- The licence can be checked on the official register.
- Fuel, tolls and the driver's room are where misunderstandings start.
- Foreign cards may not work at toll booths. Carry cash.
- Shopping stops can be declined politely, at the start.
- Night driving is where the risk rises.
Before you hire a driver
- Two or three written quotes, each listing what is included.
- The daily rate, fuel, tolls, parking, the driver's room and meals, distance limit and hours agreed in writing.
- The guide licence card seen, and checked on srilanka.travel, if you want a chauffeur guide.
- Cash in small notes for tolls and tips.
- Long drives planned for daylight.
- Seat belts on, in every seat that has one.
- Shopping stops agreed, or declined, at the start.
