After a late flight, choose Negombo: about 7 km from the airport, 15 to 30 minutes by road, with an official taxi fare of 3,780 rupees (as listed October 2026). Colombo Fort is 35 to 40 km away, 45 minutes to 1 hour 15, for 8,100 rupees. Choose Colombo for a day in the city.

This guide compares the two for your first night, with the times and fares we could confirm.

Is Colombo airport in Colombo?

No. Colombo's international airport, Bandaranaike International (CMB), is not in Colombo. It is at Katunayake, about 30 km north of central Colombo. The beach town of Negombo is much closer.

How far is Negombo from the airport?

Negombo is about 7 kilometres from the airport by road: about 15 to 30 minutes (estimate, checked October 2026).

How far is Colombo from the airport?

By road, Colombo Fort is about 35 to 40 kilometres from the airport, mostly on the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway: about 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes without heavy traffic (estimate, checked October 2026). City traffic at rush hour can add more.

The expressway

The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway, the E03, opened on 27 October 2013. It links the airport area with the edge of Colombo, running about 23 kilometres between its Katunayake and Peliyagoda interchanges.

The expressway is tolled. For a car, Katunayake to Peliyagoda costs 400 rupees, as gazetted in December 2025. Tolls can be paid in cash, by card or by LankaQR, but card payment at the booths is meant for cards from Sri Lankan banks, so carry cash. The airport taxi page does not say whether its fixed fares include the toll, so ask before you set off.

On the expressway the speed limit is 100 km/h, and the 24-hour expressway emergency number is 1969.

How much is a taxi from the airport?

The official Airport Taxi Service has counters in the arrival hall and fixed fares by destination. As listed in October 2026:

  • Negombo: 3,780 rupees.
  • Colombo Fort: 8,100 rupees.

Each kilometre beyond the destination you booked costs 130 rupees.

The airport lists Uber and PickMe among its official ways to get to and from the airport. It does not publish where app drivers wait, so check the pick-up point in the app.

Is there a bus from the airport to Colombo?

Yes. The airport's route 187 air-conditioned bus to Colombo Fort runs 24 hours, takes about 50 minutes and costs 325 rupees, plus 325 rupees for baggage over 23 kg. It leaves from the outer porch of the departure terminal (as listed October 2026).

Why choose Negombo for a late arrival?

The UK government warns that driving in Sri Lanka is erratic and that road accidents are frequent, especially at night. If your flight lands late, a first night in Negombo, about 7 km from the airport, keeps the night drive short. The next morning you can start the long drive inland in daylight; see Colombo airport to Kandy or Sigiriya.

Should you skip the first night and drive straight inland?

You can, but it is a long first day. By road, Kandy is about 110 to 120 kilometres from the airport, depending on the route: allow about 3 to 4 hours. Sigiriya is about 140 km: allow about 3 to 4.5 hours (estimates, checked October 2026). No train runs from Colombo to Kandy station until about January 2027. If you land in the morning and feel rested, driving straight on saves a night; if you land late, the night drive is the risk to avoid.

What is there to see in Negombo?

Negombo sits beside a lagoon that was a trading port in the 15th century. The canal through town is often called the Dutch Canal, but the Hamilton Canal in its present form dates from the early British period, around 1802; it links the Negombo Lagoon south towards the Kelani River near Colombo.

Why choose Colombo?

Choose Colombo if you want to spend time in the city before or after your route. One of Colombo's best-known Buddhist temples, Gangaramaya, stands beside Beira Lake about 3 km south of Fort. It dates from the late 19th century, and the temple sells entry tickets. Its Seema Malaka, a meditation hall on platforms in the lake, was designed by the Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Dress for a temple, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; see temple etiquette.
