PickMe and Uber both work in Sri Lanka, and both show the price before you book. PickMe, a Sri Lankan app, covers far more of the island. Uber runs rides in Colombo and nearby districts, Kandy, Galle, and since 2026 Kegalle, Ratnapura and Kurunegala (as checked October 2026). In small tourist towns, do not count on either.

This guide explains where each app works, how to sign up and pay, and when a street tuk-tuk or a driver is the better choice.

What is PickMe?

PickMe is a Sri Lankan app, built and run in Sri Lanka by Digital Mobility Solutions Lanka PLC. Besides rides, it does food and grocery delivery, parcel delivery, trucks and vehicle rentals.

In PickMe you choose a vehicle type: a tuk-tuk, a small or larger car, or a van for a group with luggage. The category names differ between PickMe's own pages, so go by the picture and the seat count in the app.

Where does PickMe work in Sri Lanka?

PickMe covers far more of Sri Lanka than Uber. It is strongest in and around Colombo, and the company names Kandy, Galle, Jaffna and Anuradhapura among its main centres. In 2024-25 it added Jaffna, Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam and Anuradhapura. PickMe does not publish a list of every town it serves, and in smaller places there may be few drivers (as checked October 2026).

How do you sign up and pay with PickMe?

You sign up to PickMe with a phone number. PickMe does not say whether a foreign number works. Travellers report mixed results, with the code sometimes sent by WhatsApp, so the surest way is to buy a Sri Lankan SIM first. A local number also lets drivers call you.

PickMe takes cash or in-app payment. PickMe does not say whether foreign cards work, and some travellers say theirs were refused, so carry rupees in small notes. Since August 2026, Indian visitors can also pay for PickMe rides with UPI from an Indian bank app.

Does Uber work in Sri Lanka?

Yes, in fewer areas than PickMe. Uber rides cover Colombo and the nearby districts of Gampaha and Kalutara, plus Kandy and Galle, and since 2026 Kegalle, Ratnapura and Kurunegala (as checked October 2026).

Uber in Sri Lanka offers motorbikes, tuk-tuks and cars, with larger vans in some areas. In October 2026 it added Uber Black, a premium SUV option. Which options you see depends on where you are.

Your usual Uber account works in Sri Lanka without changes. You can pay by card or in cash. Tell your bank you are travelling, because some cards block payments abroad.

Uber shows the price before you book. The final fare can change if you change the destination or route, add a stop, or if tolls apply.

Is there Uber in Nuwara Eliya?

In Nuwara Eliya, Uber offers food delivery (Uber Eats, since April 2026), but we found no announcement of Uber rides there, as checked October 2026. Do not plan on booking an Uber ride in Nuwara Eliya; PickMe may have drivers there. See our guide to Nuwara Eliya and tea country.

Can you book an Uber between cities?

Uber also has an Intercity option for long trips between cities, booked in the app, with routes such as Colombo to Ella, Galle to Ella and Colombo to Mirissa. The fare shown does not include tolls and parking, which you pay the driver in cash. Getting an Uber to a town is not the same as finding one once you are there.

Do the apps work outside the cities?

Outside the cities, do not count on an app. Uber has not announced rides in Ella, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya or on the south coast beyond Galle. PickMe drivers do work in some tourist towns, including Ella, but in late 2025 street drivers protested against app drivers in Ella, Weligama and Sigiriya, and PickMe itself says coverage in some tourist areas is limited by intimidation. As checked October 2026, plan to use a local tuk-tuk or a hired driver there, and try the app if you have signal.

App drivers have sometimes been threatened by street drivers. In July 2025 police acted on reports of intimidation near Colombo Fort railway station, and in December 2025 police arrested three people after attacks on app drivers in Ella. In January 2026 the head of the police said violence or threats against app drivers would be treated as crimes. If a driver will not come to a taxi stand, walk a short way from it before you book.

Is an app cheaper than a street tuk-tuk?

In the Western Province, which includes Colombo, the official street fare for a tuk-tuk is 110 rupees for the first kilometre and 90 rupees for each kilometre after that (since 23 March 2026, still current in October 2026). Ride apps are not bound by this rate and set their own prices, which they show before you book. Check the app's price against the official rate, or against what a street driver asks, before you choose.

The app's advantage is a known price with no bargaining. Outside the Western Province, where there is no official rate, that price is a fair reference even if you then take a street tuk-tuk. See what a tuk-tuk ride should cost.

Can you use PickMe or Uber at Colombo airport?

Colombo airport lists Uber and PickMe among its official ways to get to and from the airport, so you can book either app when you land. The airport does not publish where app drivers wait; follow the pick-up directions in the app. Our guide to Colombo airport to Kandy or Sigiriya covers the longer trips.

What do you need before you use a ride app?

Both apps need mobile data, and a local number helps drivers reach you. You can buy a SIM at the airport counters in the arrivals hall, which are open 24 hours, or get an eSIM. Bring your passport: every SIM in Sri Lanka must be registered.

Are ride apps safe?

Both apps show the driver's name, photo and number plate before pick-up, and let you share your trip live with someone. PickMe has an SOS button; Uber has an in-app emergency button and a 24-hour safety line. Check that the car and plate match before you get in. For the wider picture, see is Sri Lanka safe?.

Are there other taxi apps?

Kangaroo Cabs is a long-established Colombo taxi company with its own app. It offers tuk-tuks, cars and vans, airport transfers and hourly or daily hire, and takes cash or card.
