Kandy to Ella without the train (2026)

As checked 3 October 2026, no train runs from Kandy to Ella, so you have two options. Drive all the way: about 130 km, 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Or drive about 80 km to Nanu Oya (2 to 3 hours) and take the reopened train to Ella, about 2.5 hours; for the 9:00 train, leave Kandy by 6:00.
This guide compares the two, with the times, fares and the one long-distance bus we could confirm.
Why is there no train from Kandy to Ella?
As checked on 3 October 2026, no train runs from Kandy to Ella. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country line in late November 2025, and repairs are still going on. Trains run again between Nanu Oya and Badulla, through Ella, since 20 June 2026. Check railway.gov.lk before you travel.
Before the cyclone, the train from Kandy to Ella took about six to seven and a half hours. By car the trip is about three and a half to four and a half hours, though you miss the famous ride unless you take the train from Nanu Oya.
Option 1: drive all the way
By car, Kandy to Ella is about 130 kilometres on mountain roads, usually through Nuwara Eliya. Allow about three and a half to four and a half hours without stops (estimate, checked October 2026). Road conditions change after heavy rain, so ask your driver or hotel on the day.
Which road should you take?
There are two main road routes, and they take about the same time: one climbs through Nuwara Eliya, the other goes east past the Victoria reservoir and through Badulla. The Nuwara Eliya road is the one most people take, because you can stop at Nuwara Eliya or Horton Plains on the way.

Estimates, checked October 2026:
- Kandy to Nuwara Eliya: about 70 km, about 1.75 to 2.5 hours, longer in traffic or rain.
- Nuwara Eliya to Ella: about 55 to 60 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Option 2: drive to Nanu Oya, then take the train
From Kandy to Nanu Oya station, near Nuwara Eliya, is about 80 kilometres on a mountain road. Allow about 2 to 3 hours (estimate, checked October 2026). From Nanu Oya you can take the reopened train to Ella; on the way it passes Pattipola, the highest station on the line.

As of October 2026, trains leave Nanu Oya for Ella and Badulla at 9:00 every day, at 14:30 every day except Wednesday, and at 13:00 on Wednesdays only, the Ella Odyssey. The ride to Ella takes about two and a half hours. Trains are often late, and the timetable will change when the rest of the line reopens, so check on the day.
What time should you leave Kandy?
To catch the 9:00 train from Nanu Oya, leave Kandy by about 6:00 in the morning. To catch the afternoon train, leave by about 11:00; on Wednesdays, when the afternoon train is the 13:00 Ella Odyssey, leave by about 10:00. Leave extra time, because you cannot buy back a missed train. Or spend the night before in Nuwara Eliya.
How much is the train from Nanu Oya to Ella?
Sri Lanka Railways' fare tables, still the ones dated August 2022 when checked in October 2026, list reserved seats from Nanu Oya to Ella at Rs 2,000 in first class, Rs 1,200 in second and Rs 900 in third, and unreserved tickets at Rs 600, Rs 300 and Rs 160. Booking online adds 5%.

Hiring a driver for the day
See hiring a driver in Sri Lanka for licences, costs and what to agree.
Before you start, agree in writing what the price covers: the daily rate, fuel, expressway tolls, parking, the driver's room and meals, any daily distance limit and the charge for going over it, and the hours of the working day.
Since March 2026, fuel in Sri Lanka has been rationed. This can affect hired cars, so ask your driver how fuel is handled and who pays (checked October 2026).
The UK government warns that driving in Sri Lanka is erratic and that road accidents are frequent, especially at night. Plan long drives for daylight, and watch for pedestrians and animals on the road.
If you take the train from Nanu Oya, your driver can take the car and your bags on by road and meet you at Ella station. Agree this in advance. For how this fits a shorter trip, see ten days in Sri Lanka.
Can you take a tuk-tuk instead?
For short distances, yes. Outside the Western Province there are no official tuk-tuk fares, so agree the price before you get in. PickMe covers most of the island, but app coverage in small hill towns can be thin (as checked October 2026). See tuk-tuk prices.
