Buses in Sri Lanka: how they work, and when to take one

Buses in Sri Lanka are the cheapest way to get around: as checked in October 2026, Colombo to Kandy costs 521 rupees on a normal bus and 1,018 rupees with air conditioning. On most buses you get on and pay the conductor in cash. Government travel advice warns that buses are often driven fast, so choose your bus with care.

This guide explains the kinds of bus, the fares, where buses leave from in Colombo, how to book, and what the safety advice says.

How do buses work in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two kinds of bus. The state-owned Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) runs one kind; its buses are usually painted red. Private companies run the other kind, and there are many more of them. The National Transport Commission regulates long-distance buses that cross from one province to another. Buses that stay inside one province are regulated by that province's own passenger transport authority.

On most buses you simply get on and pay the conductor during the journey. Carry cash in small notes. You are entitled to a ticket that shows where you got on, where you are going, the fare, the date and the bus number. Since late 2025, some buses on selected routes, including some expressway routes from Makumbura, also take bank cards, but this is not yet everywhere, and it is not confirmed that foreign cards work (checked October 2026). See money in Sri Lanka.

What kinds of bus are there?

The official fare lists have three classes of ordinary long-distance bus:

  • Normal: the cheapest, and can be very crowded.
  • Semi-luxury: one and a half times the normal fare.
  • Air-conditioned luxury: about twice the normal fare.

Expressway buses are a separate, air-conditioned luxury service. They use the expressways, for example from Makumbura near Colombo to Galle and Matara, and from Colombo towards Kandy (partly on expressways). Not every route has every class.

How much is a bus in Sri Lanka?

As checked in October 2026, the minimum bus fare is 34 rupees. It has applied since 6 July 2026. Bus fares are reviewed every July, and they can also change in between when fuel prices rise sharply: in March 2026 the minimum fare went from 27 to 30 rupees, and in July 2026 it went up to 34 rupees. Fuel prices went up again on 1 October 2026, but bus fares did not change.

Long-distance fares are low. Official full fares, in force since 6 July 2026 and checked October 2026:

  • Colombo to Kandy: 521 rupees on a normal bus, 1,018 rupees with air conditioning.
  • Colombo to Galle, on the coast road: 496 rupees normal, 970 rupees with air conditioning.
  • Colombo to Nuwara Eliya: 844 rupees (normal).
  • Colombo to Jaffna: 1,701 rupees (normal).

Official expressway bus fares:

  • Makumbura to Galle: 930 rupees.
  • Makumbura to Matara: 1,170 rupees.
  • Colombo to Matara: 1,320 rupees.
  • Colombo to Kandy: 1,230 rupees.

For the train on the same coast, see the Colombo to Galle train.

Where do buses leave from in Colombo?

In Colombo, most long-distance buses leave from Pettah, next to Colombo Fort railway station. SLTB buses use the Central Bus Stand, and private long-distance buses use the Bastian Mawatha private bus stand nearby. Expressway buses to the south (Galle and Matara) mostly start at the Makumbura Multimodal Centre in Kottawa, in Colombo's south-eastern suburbs; some also start at Kadawatha or Kaduwela.

Is there a bus from Colombo airport?

From the airport, the route 187 air-conditioned bus runs to Colombo Fort 24 hours a day on the expressway. The airport lists the fare as 325 rupees, plus 325 rupees for baggage over 23 kg, and the trip as about 50 minutes. A second airport bus goes to the Makumbura Multimodal Centre for 410 rupees, from where expressway buses go south (as listed by the airport, October 2026). If you are deciding where to spend the first night, see Negombo or Colombo.

Can you book a bus seat online?

Ordinary buses cannot be booked: you just get on. For some long-distance buses you can book a seat online on two official sites:

  • Private long-distance buses: the government site is busticket.gov.lk. It started as a trial in May 2026 and takes Visa and Mastercard.
  • SLTB buses: the Transport Board's own website sends you to sltb.eseat.lk.

The booking forms ask for a Sri Lankan mobile number, so a local SIM card helps. Not every route can be booked (checked October 2026).

Can you take a bus from Kandy to Ella?

As checked in October 2026, no train runs from Kandy to Ella, because the hill-country line is still being repaired after Cyclone Ditwah. Trains run again between Nanu Oya and Badulla, through Ella.

By bus, the official fare list has a long-distance route 21 from Kandy to Badulla, at 590 rupees on a normal bus and 885 rupees on a semi-luxury bus (from 6 July 2026). The list does not say which road it takes or whether it stops at Ella, which is about 20 kilometres from Badulla. Ask at Kandy's bus station for departure times. Our guide to Kandy to Ella without the train compares the road options.

Are buses in Sri Lanka safe?

The UK government's travel advice warns that "public buses are often driven fast, rarely give way and are often poorly maintained", and that this has led to serious bus accidents. It says tourist buses are usually driven more safely, but standards vary (advice updated September 2026).

Canada's travel advice goes further and calls travel by public bus "generally unsafe due to aggressive drivers, poor maintenance and the risk of theft" (advice updated July 2026). If you take long road journeys, many visitors choose a car with a hired driver instead, but the bus remains the cheapest way to get around.

The UK government's advice also notes that women report harassment in Sri Lanka, and that most reported cases happen in crowded places, including bus stations and buses (advice updated September 2026). Our guide is Sri Lanka safe? covers the rest of the advice.

What should you know before you get on?

Seats for passengers with special needs. Buses must have seats set aside for members of the clergy, pregnant women and people with disabilities. These seats are usually at the front. If you are sitting there and a monk or another of these passengers gets on, give up the seat.

Luggage. There is no general luggage allowance on ordinary buses, and big bags can be a problem on crowded normal buses and on small minibuses, where your bag may end up on your lap. On semi-luxury, luxury and expressway buses you should get a seat, because these buses may carry only seated passengers. The airport buses charge an extra fare for baggage over 23 kg.

Fuel and services. Since March 2026, fuel in Sri Lanka has been rationed with a QR-code system. Buses get their own fuel allowance, based on the distance each bus runs. Even so, fuel costs have disrupted services: in June 2026, private bus owners cut services sharply in a dispute over fares, before fares went up in July. Services can be thinner than usual, so leave extra time and check locally before a long journey (checked October 2026).

Your rights. If something goes wrong on a private long-distance bus, you can complain to the National Transport Commission on its hotline, 1955. The Commission's passenger guide says the destination should be shown in Sinhala, Tamil and English, the approved fare chart should be displayed in the bus, smoking is not allowed, and any radio must be kept below 80 decibels.

When should you take a bus, and when not?

A bus suits short and medium trips, travel on a tight budget, and routes with expressway or air-conditioned services. For long days with luggage, several stops, or travel after dark, a car with a driver or a ride app is usually easier; see PickMe and Uber in Sri Lanka.
