Ella in 2026: how to get there, the walks and the bridge

In Ella, walk Little Adam's Peak or the longer Ella Rock, see the Nine Arch Bridge from beside the line, and stop at Ravana Falls. No train runs from Kandy (as checked 3 October 2026), so take the train from Nanu Oya, about 2.5 hours, or drive about 130 km from Kandy, 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
This guide explains how to reach Ella now, what to do once you are there, and how long to stay.
Where is Ella?
Ella is a small town in the eastern hill country, about 1,000 metres above the sea, so it is cooler than the coast. It sits on the railway line from Nanu Oya to Badulla.
How do you get to Ella in 2026?
As checked on 3 October 2026, no train runs from Kandy to Ella. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country line in late November 2025, and repairs are still going on. After the cyclone, trains first ran again only between Badulla and Ambewela. On 20 June 2026 the line was repaired as far as Nanu Oya, and since then trains have run between Nanu Oya and Badulla, through Ella. Check railway.gov.lk before you travel.
By train from Nanu Oya
As of October 2026, trains leave Nanu Oya for Ella and Badulla at 9:00 every day, at 14:30 every day except Wednesday, and at 13:00 on Wednesdays only, the Ella Odyssey. The ride to Ella takes about two and a half hours. Trains are often late, so check on the day.
If you drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya station, near Nuwara Eliya, it is about 80 km on a mountain road. Allow about two to three hours. On the way to Ella, the train passes Pattipola, the highest station on the line. See the Kandy to Ella train for booking, classes and fares.
By road
Estimates, checked October 2026:
- From Kandy: about 130 km on slow mountain roads, about 3.5 to 4.5 hours. See Kandy to Ella without the train.
- From Nuwara Eliya: about 55 to 60 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours.
- From Colombo: about 200 km, about 4.5 to 6.5 hours. As of October 2026 there is no train from Colombo to Ella.
What are the best walks in Ella?
Ella has three well-known walks:

- Little Adam's Peak: a shorter walk through tea gardens to a summit at 1,141 metres. It is not the real Adam's Peak, Sri Pada.
- Ella Rock: the longest and hardest. Rough Guides puts it at around four hours in total, with steep sections near the top, so carry water and good shoes. The usual route starts along the railway line, so the same rule applies as at the bridge: check the train times and step well clear when a train comes.
- The Nine Arch Bridge: about 2.8 kilometres from Ella station along the railway. The popular walk from Ella follows the railway track itself, through cuttings and a tunnel, which means walking where trains run. If you take it, check the train times first and step well clear when a train comes.

Is the Nine Arch Bridge worth seeing?
See photographing the Nine Arch Bridge for the full timetable and the safe places to stand.
The Nine Arch Bridge is on the railway between Ella and Demodara stations, about 2.8 kilometres along the line from Ella station. The engineer in charge, Harold Cuthbert Marwood of the Ceylon Government Railway, wrote that the work was completed in January 1919. The bridge and 100 metres of land on each side of the railway are a protected archaeological monument, declared in 2023.
As of October 2026, four trains cross the bridge each day, two in each direction. Towards Badulla, trains leave Ella at 11:27 every day, at 16:57 every day except Wednesday, and at 15:21 on Wednesdays only. Towards Nanu Oya, trains leave Demodara at 09:37 every day except Wednesday, at 15:37 every day, and at 08:19 on Wednesdays only.
Is it safe?
Trains cross the bridge slowly, but a train cannot stop quickly, and people have been hit here. In December 2023 a young local woman was killed by a train near the bridge, and in October 2025 an Indian visitor was injured when she was hit by a train at the bridge. Walking on the railway is trespass under Sri Lanka's Railways Ordinance. Watch from beside the line, never from the track or the bridge deck.
Wild bees nest around the bridge. In May 2023 a swarm attacked a group of tourists there, and they needed hospital treatment. Do not throw things at nests or fly a drone near them.
A fake AI video showing the bridge lit up at night has misled visitors; it is not lit. As of the latest report found (November 2025), a lighting project was postponed with no new date, and no fee had started.
What is Ravana Falls?
Ravana Falls is beside the main road from Ella down to Wellawaya, about 6 kilometres from Ella town, about 15 minutes by road (estimate, checked October 2026). You see it from the roadside. It is at its fullest at the end of the rainy season or just after.

The falls are named after Ravana, a king in the Ramayana epic. A local legend says Ravana hid Sita, whom he had kidnapped, in a cave behind the waterfall. It is a legend, not history.
Can you visit a tea factory near Ella?
Near Ella, Uva Halpewatte tea factory lists a guided factory tour with tasting for 3,000 rupees (price checked October 2026). We have no arrangement with it. See tea country for how a leaf becomes Ceylon tea.
When is the best weather in Ella?
The west and south coasts are driest from about December to March. The east coast is driest from about May to September. In December and January, the eastern side of the hills, around Ella, can still be wet. See when to visit Sri Lanka.
Where can you go from Ella?
Estimates, checked October 2026:
- Tissamaharama, for Yala: about 2 to 3 hours by road. See leopards in Yala.
- Udawalawe: about 100 km, roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. See Udawalawe.
- Arugam Bay: about 3 to 4.5 hours by road.
- Horton Plains: about 50 km by road; or take the train to Ohiya, about an hour and a half from Ella. See Horton Plains and World's End.
How many days do you need in Ella?
Our advice: two nights. That gives you one full day for a long walk such as Ella Rock and a short one such as Little Adam's Peak, with time for the bridge or the falls. If you arrive on the afternoon train, one night only leaves time for a short walk.
Practical notes for Ella
- Getting around: the PickMe app offers tuk-tuks and cars in many towns, but in some tourist places, such as Ella, app drivers can be hard to find (checked January 2026). Agree tuk-tuk prices before you set off; see tuk-tuk prices.
- Eating out: in tourist areas such as Ella, a meal for two with a couple of beers is about 5,000 to 8,000 rupees (checked October 2026).
- Bottled water: it has a legal maximum price, set by the Consumer Affairs Authority, and the price is normally printed on the label. Sellers who charge more can be fined. In September 2026 a restaurant in Ella was fined for doing this.
What most visitors miss
- The train to Ella still runs, from Nanu Oya.
- Ella Rock starts on the railway, so the track rule applies there too.
- The bridge is not lit at night. The video is fake.
- Ravana Falls is a roadside stop, not a hike.
- Little Adam's Peak is not Adam's Peak.
Before you go to Ella
- Train times checked on the day, or a driver arranged.
- Shoes with grip and water for Ella Rock.
- Train times checked before any walk on or near the line.
- Small notes for tuk-tuks; agree the price first.
- Two nights, if you can.
