Sri Lanka in July and August: Arugam Bay or Trincomalee?

In July and August, plan your beach days on the east coast, which is usually in its dry season, while the south-west monsoon brings rain to Galle and the west. Choose Arugam Bay for surfing (its season runs April to October) or Trincomalee for Nilaveli beach and Pigeon Island. The Cultural Triangle is dry too, with Minneriya's Gathering.
This guide explains why summer routes go east, how to choose between the two bays, and how to fit them into a trip.
Why go east in July and August?
From May to September, the Southwest monsoon brings rain to the south-west of the island: Colombo, the west coast, the south coast around Galle, and the western side of the hill country. On the coast, the heaviest rain usually comes early, in May. The north and the east get little rain in these months.
On the east coast, including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, the dry months are usually April to September. In the Cultural Triangle, the driest months are usually June to September. So in July and August both are in their dry season.
The two monsoons hit opposite sides of the island, so in most months one coast is wet while the other is dry. Monsoon timing and strength change from year to year, so treat this as a likely pattern, not a promise. See when to visit Sri Lanka.
Arugam Bay or Trincomalee?
The two are far apart. Trincomalee to Arugam Bay is about 250 kilometres, about 6.5 to 9 hours by road (estimate, checked October 2026), so doing both usually means a night on the way, for example at Pasikudah.
- Choose Arugam Bay for surfing and for Kumana National Park.
- Choose Trincomalee for Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches, snorkelling at Pigeon Island, and an easy drive from the Cultural Triangle.
What is Arugam Bay like in July and August?
Sri Lanka Tourism gives Arugam Bay's surf season as April to October, so July and August are in the middle of it.
Arugam Bay has several surf breaks within a short tuk-tuk ride of each other. Sri Lanka Tourism describes Pottuvil Point, north of the bay, as a favourite of experienced surfers. If you are new to surfing, take lessons and ask the instructor which break suits you that day.
Kumana National Park
Kumana National Park lies south of Arugam Bay, on the far side of Yala, which it borders. It is best known for birds: Sri Lanka Tourism says 255 species have been recorded there. A 2025 study by Sri Lankan scientists and the wildlife department also found a high number of leopards. Permits and guides are arranged at the park office at Okanda, about 30 kilometres south of Arugam Bay, about 1 to 1.5 hours by road (estimate, checked October 2026).
As checked in October 2026, the latest official fee table we could confirm dates from August 2022. Kumana is in the middle fee band: a foreign adult pays 12 US dollars for a daytime visit, and a child 6 dollars. A service charge and vehicle fee are added per jeep, and taxes on top.
Is Arugam Bay safe to visit?
In October 2024 the US Embassy in Colombo said it had received credible information of a possible attack on tourist spots in the Arugam Bay area and advised its citizens to stay away. Sri Lankan police stepped up security there, and three Sri Lankans were detained for questioning. No attack took place, and the US Embassy lifted its restriction on 13 November 2024.
As checked in October 2026, neither UK nor US travel advice singles out Arugam Bay or the east coast. Both ask visitors to stay alert across Sri Lanka, as they do in many countries. Check your own government's advice before you travel.
What is Trincomalee like in July and August?
Trincomalee's two best-known beaches are Uppuveli, close to the town, and Nilaveli, further north. Nilaveli is about 15 kilometres from Trincomalee, about 30 to 45 minutes by road (estimate, checked October 2026).
Pigeon Island
Pigeon Island National Park is a marine park just off Nilaveli, reached by boat. It protects some of the best remaining coral reefs in Sri Lanka, and snorkellers often see reef fish, turtles and blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. Reefs here, like everywhere, have been damaged in the past, so do not touch or stand on the coral.

As checked in October 2026, Pigeon Island is in the top fee band under the 2022 table: a foreign adult pays 25 US dollars in the tourist season or 20 dollars at other times, plus 5 dollars to snorkel. There is also a small boat fee, the boat hire itself, and taxes on top.
Koneswaram
Koneswaram, on the headland at Trincomalee, is an important Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The Portuguese destroyed the old temple in the 1620s and built a fort on its ruins; the temple was later rebuilt.

Dress as for any Hindu kovil: take off your shoes, and cover your shoulders and knees. Some kovils ask men to remove their shirts in the inner areas, and some keep the inner shrine for Hindus only, so watch what local people do or ask at the entrance. See temple etiquette in Sri Lanka.
Whales off Trincomalee
Off Trincomalee, on the north-east coast, blue whales are seen mainly from February to April, and research records few there after April. The Sri Lanka Navy runs its Trincomalee cruises from May to October, when that sea is calm. So in July and August you can take a boat trip, but blue whales are unlikely.
Where is Pasikudah?
Pasikudah, on the coast north of Batticaloa, sits between the two: about 110 kilometres south of Trincomalee, about 3 to 4 hours by road, and about 150 kilometres north of Arugam Bay, about 3.5 to 5 hours (estimates, checked October 2026).
How does a summer route fit together?
If you travel between May and September, think about swapping the south coast for the east coast. The Cultural Triangle is at its driest from June to September, and it is also the season of the elephant Gathering at Minneriya, from about June to October. See the Gathering at Minneriya. For the far north, see our Jaffna guide.
Estimates, checked October 2026:
- Sigiriya to Trincomalee: about 100 km, about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. From Habarana, about 85 km, 2 to 3 hours.
- Ella to Arugam Bay: about 3 to 4.5 hours.
- Back to the airport: about 5.5 to 7.5 hours from Trincomalee, and about 7.5 to 10 hours from Arugam Bay.
Two dates to know. The Kandy Esala Perahera is a ten-night procession in July or August; in 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August. And in 2026, Yala's Blocks I and II were closed from 14 September until 15 October.
Is the sea safe on the east coast in summer?
Dry season does not mean a safe sea. Many beaches in Sri Lanka have strong surf or rip currents at some times of year, and Arugam Bay is a surf beach. Ask at your hotel before you swim. See swimming safety in Sri Lanka.
